As early as December 2022, Russia disrupted navigation services around the Kremlin to protect itself from enemy drones. Barely hours after the suspected drone attack on May 3, Russia seems to have paralyzed satellite navigation again. This time, however, not only near the Kremlin.

According to the media company “Meduza”, there have been GPS malfunctions throughout Moscow since Wednesday morning. The region around the city center is particularly affected. The website GPSJam also shows that since May 3, GPS jamming has also been observed in other parts of Russia.

A media spokesman for the search engine service Yandex confirmed to RBC that the outage in Moscow affects all GPS services – from the fitness watch to digital mapping systems or transportation apps such as Uber.

Digital maps show the wrong whereabouts: if you are in one part of the city, you are just in another part of the map. Photos also show transportation apps locating e-scooters and taxis on the water. According to local reports, transportation services such as Uber are having “big trouble” operating to some extent.

However, according to Yandex, the infrastructure of Internet services functions normally. GPS information from smartphones and tablets would also still be transmitted, but in some cases significantly falsified.

The reason for the malfunction is unclear

It is not yet clear why the GPS information is incorrect. Moscow police officers informed «Baza» that during the preparations for the planned Victory Parade on May 9, a fake GPS system had been activated.

It is also possible that the GPS jamming is in response to the suspected drone attack on the Kremlin to prevent Ukrainian drones from reaching their target. It is unclear whether this was really an attack. In any case, it goes without saying that Russia itself is behind the satellite malfunction and is making tactical use of it.
