As a “difficult” test for conservatives. This is how the British Prime Minister described it Rishi Sunak of the partial local elections held this Thursday and admitted that the prognosis for his people is not good. He blamed the “drama” in which his predecessors acted, Boris Johnson and Liz Truss.
“We must be ready because the night will be difficult,” the president said during the event. “Good councilors are going to lose their seats because of everything that’s happened over the last year,” he said, referring to the crisis that brought down Johnson and Truss.
Despite the fact that polls put Labor up to 16 points above the tories and some estimate that they could lose up to a thousand positions, Sunak was convinced that he would be able to turn the situation around in the general elections next year. “I’ve only been prime minister for six months, but I think we’re making good progress (…) Our economy is in better shape and our politics no longer looks like a drama,” he said.
The elections are going peacefully, although there were incidents. Organizations such as the Society for Electoral Reform were condemned “countless” cases of being prevented from voting for not carrying a driving licence, passport or other photo ID, which is a new requirement in the UK.
Authorities estimated that 2.1 million people did not have documents to prove their identity, and only 70,000 requested alternative permission to exercise their constitutional right.
