A day after the knife attack on the grounds of a Protestant primary school in Berlin with two seriously injured girls (7 and 8), the alleged perpetrator (38) is placed in a psychiatric ward. An investigating judge decided this on Thursday at the request of the public prosecutor, as announced. In two cases, the warrant was issued for attempted manslaughter.

The prosecutor had previously requested the placement for attempted manslaughter and dangerous bodily harm. There are indications of a possible mental illness of the suspect, which could be caused by drugs.

Seven-year-old stabbed multiple times

According to inside information, the man would have attacked the seven and eight-year-old girls on Wednesday afternoon in the playground in Neukölln with a kitchen knife. He stabbed the seven-year-old several times.

Both girls came to the hospital and were immediately operated on. The seven-year-old is now out of danger and the eight-year-old will remain so.

The 38-year-old suspect was arrested near the school grounds. Investigators say he confessed to the crime. The background to the attack was still unclear. It was also unclear whether the 38-year-old and the two victims knew each other.

Murder weapon seized

The police had already announced on Wednesday that they could confiscate a knife. Officials searched the school after the crime and turned all other students over to their parents.

The Bishop of the Evangelical Churches of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesia Upper Lusatia, Christian Stäblein, reacted with horror to the crime. “The terrible attack on two children at the Protestant school in Berlin-Neukölln shocked and deeply affected me,” he said during a visit to the school on Thursday.

His thoughts are with the injured girls and their families. Stäblein thanked the rescue workers, teachers and pastors, among others. “Especially in such a terrible crisis situation, we need the network of this togetherness,” he added. Several members of the Berlin state government had already expressed their shock on Wednesday. (AFP)
