In the US, a McDonald’s franchisee employed two 10-year-olds. According to the authorities, the children worked unpaid, sometimes even until 2 a.m.
They “prepared and served food, cleaned the store, worked the drive-thru window and operated a cash register,” the detectives said.
They found that “one of the two children was allowed to operate a fryer, a prohibited activity for workers under the age of 16.” The authorities discovered the case in a random sample.
The Louisville, Kentucky-based operator of ten McDonald’s locations in two U.S. states tried to talk his way out of “CBS News.” The children visited their parents, who worked the night shift for the company, he said. All the children’s work was done by order and in the presence of their parents.
In addition, the company has changed some things after the incident, he added. This would ensure stricter compliance with guidelines regarding children visiting parents and carers at work.
The inspectors found other violations. For example, 24 minors under the age of 16 worked in McDonald’s stores, more than the law allows.
Violations will cost the operator dearly. The US Department of Labor imposed fines of approximately CHF 36,000. (nad)
