Images of the war in Ukraine published in the media show no blood and none of the victims being mauled. Photographers provide disturbing images of victims and the front. But for reasons of media ethics, applicable guidelines and also emotions within societies, no photos of the dead are shown.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (45) now breaks this silent agreement for the first time. On his Facebook page he shows the horrors of war with the victims. Otherwise, he has already shared images of serious destruction. But not yet dead.
Selenskis otherwise uses his Facebook channel for official announcements. Now he shares the unvarnished terror to which his people are subjected. The president of the besieged war country wants to wake up. Selenski rejects the diplomatic tone. “The world,” he writes, “must see and know that.”
The photos all show civilian areas bombed by Russians: a train station, an apartment, a hardware store, a supermarket and a gas station. With unrecognizable dead on the ground. “Do you know what connects these places?” Selenski asks. “It’s the bloody footprint Russia leaves with its grenades.”
The victims are men, women and children in Kherson – 21 in total, who died in Russian bombing in the same area on the same day. 48 survived wounded. “We will never forgive the guilty,” concludes Zelensky. “Let’s defeat the evil country and hold all the guilty to account!”
While Selenski’s Facebook posts usually get a few hundred comments, five hours after the post was published, there are already more than 2,000 comments from all over the world. “Heartbreaking” reads. Someone writes in Ukrainian: “God help us to end this goddamn war.”
