Donald Trump (76) laughs out loud. His biggest Republican competitor yet for the 2024 presidential election, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (44), is reeling. He gets into a fight with entertainment giant Disney, who are now taking him to court.
The cause of the dispute is DeSantis’ ban from teaching sexual orientation and transgender issues in Florida elementary schools last year. Teachers who do not follow the rules should expect to be banned from their profession. Disney strongly criticized the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” rule.
DeSantis, for his part, reacted angrily to this criticism and passed a law that severely limited Disney World’s self-governing status. The governor also threatened to build a competing theme park or prison near Disney World in Orlando.
Disney has been criticized by many Florida taxpayers for years. Since moving here in the early 1970s, the company has enjoyed a low-tax zone, which is not well received by medium-sized companies that have to pay full tax.
Disney has described DeSantis’ actions as a “targeted retaliatory campaign” and has now sued him. Disney claims the retaliation threatens Disney’s business and violates freedom of speech. The company has to go to court to protect employees, guests and partners of the amusement park.
The dispute jeopardizes DeSantis’ potential presidential candidacy. According to Marco Steenbergen (60), US expert at the University of Zurich, DeSantis could mess with the Republicans as well as the economy. “Republicans are tired of giving up their own priorities to support De Santis’ latest assault on the Wokeness.” At the same time, he could anger corporate interests, which reject this kind of interference in the market.
DeSantis still enjoys strong support in Florida. Nationally, however, certain Republicans are keeping their distance. Kevin McCarthy, 58, Speaker of the House, said: “Threatening to build a prison next to a family amusement park may not be the best idea.” And Nikki Haley, 51, presidential candidate and governor of South Carolina, has proposed that Disney move its seat to another state.
The most recent polls show that Trump has an impressive 52 percent approval rating among Republicans, while DeSantis commands just 23 percent. Trump therefore sneered that DeSantis fell “like a stone”.
DeSantis has been referred to as “Trump with a brain”. He is pursuing a hard-right course in Florida and was re-elected governor last fall in a landslide victory. He was previously considered ex-President Donald Trump’s most promising rival in the race for the Republican presidential nomination for the 2024 election. DeSantis has not yet officially announced his candidacy.
