Sudan conflict could cause up to 800,000 refugees

According to estimates by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), more than 800,000 people could flee the heavy fighting in Sudan for neighboring countries.

“We hope it doesn’t come to that, but if the violence doesn’t stop, more people will have to flee Sudan for safety,” UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi wrote on Twitter on Monday. The UNHCR is preparing together with governments and partners for a possible refugee flow.

The Sudanese state news agency Suna previously reported that more than 70,000 people had fled the Sudanese capital Khartoum for the neighboring state of White Nile in recent days. The existing camps for internally displaced persons would reach their limits there. The state borders Khartoum to the south and extends to the border with South Sudan. Thousands of Sudanese have also reportedly fled to neighboring countries.

In the Northeast African country of about 46 million inhabitants, de facto President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has been fighting since April 15 with the help of the armed forces against his deputy Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, who heads the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF). ). The two generals had taken over the leadership of Sudan through joint military coups. (sda/dpa)
