Biden’s loyalty to Kamala Harris is a gift to Trump

The political embrace continues: Joe Biden is supporting Kamala Harris as vice president in the next election campaign.

Eye rubbing in America: Joe Biden really wants to know again. The now 80-year-old Democrat would like to stay in the White House for another four years and – as he himself says in the opening video of his re-election campaign – “finish the job”. A whopping 70 percent of voters don’t think it’s funny at all, according to a recent NBC poll. If you ask Democrats alone, 51 percent still think a US president over 80 isn’t the ideal person for what is arguably the toughest job in the world.

But what should Biden have done? In the two and a half years since he took office, his party has failed to come up with a viable alternative. The Democrats would rather cherish their November midterm election success (they only lost one chamber and not both chambers of the House to the Republicans, as they suspected) than send the old guard into political retirement and look for new leaders.

Biden’s biggest mistake

The fact that Biden has to break his promise that he is only a “bridge” for this new generation of leaders is also due to his own biggest mistake as president: the election of Kamala Harris (58) as his deputy.

Two years ago, the first-ever woman in senior office was considered the leading contender for the top job in the Oval Office. And if she had performed her duties to the satisfaction of the usually critical public, Biden would now – despite the recent candidacy of his nemesis Donald Trump (76) – have stepped aside and rolled out the red carpet for her on political Olympus.

But Harris has disappointed: the Americans (approval rates of only 40 percent: even worse than Joe Biden’s), their employees (ie one of the highest churn rates in US history), and their boss.

Donald Trump rubs his hands

But Biden can’t help but bet on the former California senator again. Losing her would cause him to be misunderstood by black and female voters. That’s why he can’t help but give Harris a prominent place in his first campaign video and have her image polished by legions of PR professionals.

Opinions are being voiced on the Republican side, however: the “radical left” Harris would be a heart or brainbeat away from the levers of power as political senior Biden’s new deputy. Fire hazard! Donald Trump rubs his hands instead of his eyes.
