The Welsh Lucy Humphrey (44) had already given up hope. Her kidneys were failing due to the autoimmune disease lupus – she urgently needed a donor organ. Her dog – and an unexpected encounter – saved her life.
Humphrey has had a true medical odyssey. Over the past 15 years, her body has been severely weakened by dialysis and various drug treatments. A possible kidney transplant was repeatedly postponed due to the corona pandemic. She didn’t have long to live.
During a weekend trip to a beach near Cardiff, the tide turned abruptly: Humphrey’s Dobermann dog Indie kept sniffing a strange woman. The dog never left her side.
Humphrey initially found the meeting extremely uncomfortable, but the trip to the beach turned out to be a stroke of luck.
According to information from the “BBC”, the woman was Katie James (40). The women began to talk. Humphrey’s disease was also a problem. In lupus, your own immune system attacks your own body. The consequences of this can be severe inflammation or life-threatening organ damage.
It turned out that James had just registered as an organ donor. After they met, she immediately got tested as a potential donor. Lucky for Humphrey. Because James turned out to be the perfect match.
Incredibly, the dog was apparently able to use its sense of smell to find James as a suitable donor.
James immediately agreed to have a kidney removed. The operation took place in October 2022. With success: Humphrey’s body accepted the organ.
“A surgeon told us that the odds of finding the perfect donor are one in 22 million,” Humphrey said.
James later told the BBC that the donation was the best thing she had ever done in her life.
The memory of that encounter will stay with both Humphrey and James forever, literally. (A)
