Naples fans want to storm Mount Vesuvius

There was a preview of the cheers of the Naples fans on April 24, 2023, when their team arrived at the airport. SSC Napoli had beaten Juventus Turin in the league game the night before.

It’s cooking in Naples. Tension grows. Happiness is stuck in traffic until the big moment. A few days left. Then the joy of the body can be shouted. Then unrestrained jubilation should break out – like the eruption of a volcano. Even at the crater of Vesuvius, a huge celebration would take place – much to the dismay of the authorities of the national park below.

No Neapolitan nowadays doubts that Naples will take home the coveted Scudetto, the Serie A championship title. It’s only a matter of time. As of now, the team has a 17-point lead over first pursuers Lazio Roma – with seven games left. If Napoli won against US Salernitana on Sunday and Lazio dropped points against Inter Milan a few hours earlier, then everything will be clear after this match day. Because then the southern Italians would no longer be able to catch up. And the party at Vesuvius could begin.

After a long wait, it would be an exuberant party: it has been 33 years since the team from Campania won the Scudetto for the last time. It was 1990 – and the team’s superstar was still called Diego Armando Maradona († 60). He was the Napoli god at the time – and won the funnel-shaped golden cup with his teammates.

“If Naples wins, everyone here will go crazy”

Whatever happens this weekend in terms of results: the southern Italian port city is already sinking into sky blue, the color of SSC Napoli. No balcony without a pennant, hardly a window without a flag. Cardboard figures of football heroes stand in the alleys for selfies. An oversized Maradona painted on it kicks off the gables. And dummy volcanoes were set up everywhere, which then spewed blue sparks. “If Naples wins, everyone here will go crazy,” says club president Aurelio De Laurentiis (73), “but actually everyone has already gone crazy.”

So crazy that fans even want to occupy the crater of Vesuvius to detonate tricolor smoke bombs there. The national park authority heard about the ultimate party hit through the Italian media and reacted strongly. A forest reserve stretches along the flanks of the volcano. Partying there not only disrupts flora and fauna, but is also dangerous for people, according to the board. Said and done. Local police forces of Vesuvius Communities and Carabinieri of Vesuvius Park are now preparing for the large-scale operation under high pressure. All access areas to the crater must be closed off and guarded.

No permit for the crater party

Because the planned Gaudi did not get approval. “It can’t possibly be granted,” says the special commissioner of the Vesuvius National Park Authority, lawyer Raffaele De Luca. “Because what is being proposed goes against safety regulations and common sense.”

common sense or not. It will certainly be lifted in many places in Naples this coming weekend – should the SSC clinch the title. And if Vesuvius does not spew its lava, beer, wine and tears of joy will surely flow. And the situation becomes very explosive even without a volcano. At least that’s what the government expects.

Cars are banned from the city center and public transport is being expanded. The forces are strengthened. All hospitals are on alert. Emergency rooms and dozens of paramedic teams are available at ten points in the old city.
