“Long Long Ago…”: For Joe Biden, Yoon Suk Yeol sang “American Pie”.

At the meeting between US President Joe Biden (80) and his South Korean colleague Yoon Suk Yeol (62) in Washington on Wednesday, media coverage was mainly about the South Korean president’s singing skills. To greet the American guest, he strummed the old “American Pie” on his guitar.

An important action came in the background. The two presidents signed an agreement providing for closer cooperation. The armed forces of both countries will intensify their joint training, and the South Korean military will be better integrated into the joint strategic defense.

Biden also announced that he would send nuclear-armed submarines to South Korea for the first time in more than 40 years. Regarding North Korea, Biden bluntly warned that a nuclear attack would result in the end of the regime responsible for it.

Kim tests his weapons

Xoon Suk Yeol added that South Korea and the US would respond swiftly, overwhelmingly and decisively to a North Korean attack, using the full power of the alliance, including US nuclear weapons. Yoon also stressed the importance of talks with North Korea. But these could only make a difference from a position of strength.

Just a few days ago, North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un (39) fired a solid-fuel rocket into the Sea of Japan for the first time. Shortly before, North Korea said it had tested an underwater drone capable of “creating a radioactive tsunami of enormous magnitude”. Analysts also think it is only a matter of time before Kim orders another nuclear bomb test for the first time since 2017.

Despite this nuclear threat, one taboo remains: the United States does not want to station or deliver nuclear weapons to South Korea. Yoon also promised in Washington that his country would not strive to build its own bomb.

criticism from China

In China, the only country that has any influence over North Korea, the agreement is not well received. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning, 50, condemned the “provocative” meeting and warned of “deliberately inflaming tensions, provoking confrontation and emphasizing threats”.

The US plan alone to send a nuclear-armed submarine to South Korea undermines nuclear nonproliferation agreements and “the strategic interests of other countries,” Mao said. The goal must remain “denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula”.
