Cold or heart attack? Spokesman rejects speculation about Erdogan’s health

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has taken a break in his campaign for health reasons. A spokesman for the president said it was not a heart attack.

Communications director Fahrettin Altun shared images of tweets claiming that Erdogan had suffered a heart attack on Wednesday night, writing: “We categorically reject such baseless claims about the president’s health.” Erdogan will attend the opening of Turkey’s Akkuyu nuclear power plant via video conference on Thursday.

According to the state news agency Anadolu, Vice President Fuat Oktay said Erdogan was doing well. “We are in constant contact. He caught a cold.”

The tweet from China’s state television CGTN, according to which Erdogan is in critical condition, has since been deleted.

Erdogan (69) had to interrupt a TV interview on Tuesday evening because of stomach problems. He then took a campaign break and canceled all appearances for Wednesday. He tweeted that the complaints were minor. However, he rests on the advice of his doctors. Parliamentary and presidential elections will be held in Turkey on May 14. (aargauerzeitung.ch/dpa/chm)
