The Ukrainian army has been defending the city of Bakhmut for months.

There is still fierce fighting for the town of Bachmut. The Russians have been trying to take over the entire area for ten months. In the foreground: the Wagner Group, led by founder Yevgeny Prigozhin (61).

But they cannot do it alone and the Russian army is understaffed. That is why even the Russian state energy supplier Gazprom is now sending an army of volunteers to the front. The company is said to have already formed three units and sent them to Ukraine. The interest is apparently great. No wonder: they could earn up to $8,000 a month.

Apparently, the men have been promised that they will sign their contracts directly with the Russian Defense Ministry. A lie, a Gazprom unit now criticizes in a video call to Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin (70). This is reported by the American think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Bad handling and low ammunition

Gazprom soldiers complain that once the volunteers sign, they will be forced to join private armies, including the Wagner Group. The mercenaries are known to sometimes kill deserting comrades with a hammer.

However, they are not really part of these small units, only used as cannon fodder. They were treated badly accordingly.

Wagner mercenaries repeatedly threatened to shoot some of the Gazprom volunteers if they left their posts. Many are at their wit’s end in the process. Because: the equipment is catastrophic. In addition, there is a lack of ammunition. As a result, several Gazprom fighters have had to give up their positions, as one Russian military blogger claims.

Both Russia and Ukraine are said to have suffered huge losses in the battle for Bakhmut, home to 70,000 people before the war. According to experts, Bakhmut has little strategic value, but has acquired extreme symbolic importance. “If Russia conquers Bakhmut, it will be a Pyrrhic victory,” said Mykola Byeleskov of the National Institute of Strategic Studies in Kyiv.
