Bachmut has been in the news for months. The hard-fought city in eastern Ukraine has not yet been completely captured by the Russians.
Usually private Wagner mercenaries fight on the spot. They reported last week that they had been able to surround Bachmut, but not completely. So the offensive continues.
The oligarch and leader of the gang, Yevgeny Prigozhin (61), now makes it clear in a voice message on Telegram that the Russian government is to blame for the stagnant situation around Bakhmut. Prigozhin said his troops had some successes in Ukraine. “The Wagner Group has already fully fulfilled its mission – and will continue to carry it out, down to the last fighter,” he clarifies.
Those responsible in the Kremlin, on the other hand, would shirk their responsibility. “They don’t give us equipment,” Prigozhin complains. In addition, there is a shortage of men. And: “The rags who make these decisions are accountable to the mothers of the dead” – a clear attack on the Kremlin.
Prigozhin complains that more people are dying than necessary due to lack of equipment. His troops wouldn’t know how to defend themselves. The Wagner boss says that under the current conditions they can only hold their positions for two to three weeks – then the last Wagner mercenary would be dead.
Prigozhin even went so far as to accuse those who decide on the distribution of supplies in Russia of treason. “What is happening here is a betrayal of Russia and the Russian people.”
Although Prigozhin does not direct his criticism at Putin, its harshness is surprising. According to the Institute of War Studies (ISW), the Kremlin and Prigozhin had put aside their differences and the Wagner troops apparently had enough ammunition again. Partly because the Wagner Group is more successful in Ukraine than the military. According to experts, Prigozhin could use his angry speech to try to increase pressure on the Defense Ministry to get even more resources.
Wagner’s boss is confident Ukraine’s forthcoming spring offensive could begin as early as next week. “An offensive is inevitable,” he said in voicemail. He doubts his fighters can fend them off.
