Several miners seriously injured in mining accident in Slovakia

Nine people were injured, some seriously, in a mining accident in Slovakia. The Ministry of Health in Bratislava announced this on Wednesday. Four of them are in mortal danger, TV news channel TA3 reported in the evening based on hospital information.

The injured mainly suffered from burns and smoke inhalation. Minister of Economic Affairs Karel Hirman and Prime Minister Eduard Heger personally rushed to the scene of the accident in Novaky.

After consulting management, Hirman told journalists that large amounts of methane had unexpectedly escaped at a depth of 200 metres. The gas ignited and burned in a flash without exploding. This did not compromise the colliery’s statics.

According to Heger, the injured miners included Slovaks, two Polish workers and a Ukrainian worker. The police are investigating how the accident could have happened. (sda/dpa)
