The Republican majority legislator in the US state of Montana has banned the only transgender member from sittings of the House of Representatives. MP Zooey Zephyr (34) may continue to vote, but will no longer be able to personally attend parliamentary meetings until the end of the session on May 5, MPs decided on Wednesday. It is the latest escalation in the American conservatives’ fight against gay rights in the US.
Zephyr said during a debate about a legal ban on sex reassignment hormone therapy and surgery on underage transgender people that proponents of such a ban have “blood on their hands”.
She referred to studies showing that such therapies reduce the risk of suicide in transgender adolescents. With the statement she violated the morals of the Chamber, thus the charge that led to her expulsion.
More than a dozen Republican-ruled states in the United States have banned all or part of sex reassignment therapy for adolescents. Many of these bans have only been in effect for the past few months.
They illustrate the deeper divide between conservative and progressive forces in the United States. The debate about the rights of queer people is one of the focal points of this debate. (SDA/dzc)
