Drivers have had enough of it for a long time. Now the police are fed up with the protests because of the climate stickers. After the actions of the past few days, the chairman of the German police union Rainer Wendt (66) calls for tougher action against the activists of the “last generation”.
Until now, activists can be held in detention for different periods of time, depending on the federal state. In Berlin, for example, where the activists have been paralyzing the city again and again since Monday, detention is possible for a maximum of 48 hours. After that, the activists must be released. There are fines and complaints for most of the activists, but not much has happened so far.
According to Wendt, that is not enough. In an interview with the editorial network Germany, he argues for a uniform regulation that allows adhesives to be stored for up to 30 days. This is already possible in the state of Bavaria, for example. Wendt: “Only when the penalties become stricter will we get the situation under control.”
Since December, work has been underway on a uniform regulation for the preventive detention of climate stickers. However, so far the federal and state governments have been unable to agree on a uniform duration.
In the first stabbings on Monday, the police in Berlin took 49 activists of the ‘last generation’ into custody. They have now all been released.
As a police spokesperson told Welt, the activists were taken to court. Preventive detention was applied for because it concerned repeat offenders. This would have made it possible to arrest the activists on Tuesday evening. The court rejected this request and released de Kleber again.
More protests are planned in Berlin in the coming days. A large protest march will take place through the city on Wednesday. However, it is still unclear whether there will also be sticky actions again. (zis)
