President Alain Berset will attend King Charles’ coronation at Westminster Abbey in London on May 6. Berset accepted the invitation from Buckingham Palace, his spokesman told Keystone-SDA on Tuesday.
The Federal President and his wife are among the approximately 2,000 guests who will take part in the event. So said Christian Favre, co-head of communications at the Federal Ministry of the Interior (EDI), confirming a message from the website “lematin.ch”.
Among the guests, according to the AFP news agency, are foreign heads of state such as French President Emmanuel Macron, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. US President Joe Biden is represented by his wife Jill.
In addition, other crowned heads, including Willem-Alexander and Maxima from the Netherlands, Prince Albert II of Monaco and his wife Charlene and the Spanish King and Queen Felipe VI. and Letizia, as well as elected representatives of British civil society, are expected in London.
The historic day begins with the ‘Procession of the Kings’, which will cover approximately two kilometers from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey.
The ceremony itself will begin at 11 a.m. local time (1 p.m. Swiss time) and will be presided over by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, the spiritual leader of the Anglican Church. The party should last about an hour.
The King and Queen Camilla, who will also be crowned at the ceremony, will be taken back to Buckingham in a carriage for the “coronation procession”, this time accompanied by a procession of nearly 4,000 soldiers in full regalia. The Royal Family then appear on the balcony of the palace to greet the crowd and watch the Royal Air Force planes fly overhead.
