Gruesome finds in a forest overshadow the Kenyan tourist stronghold of Malindi. Not far from the dream beaches and luxury hotels, the local police have been digging up one body after another from the forest floor since last weekend. The 325 hectare area in Shakahola in the east of the country has been declared a crime scene.
As of yesterday, 73 dead bodies, including minors, have been recovered. This is reported by the Daily National. A family of five with three children even lay in one grave. The dead are followers of the Good News International Church. It is feared that more bodies will be found. According to the Red Cross, 178 cult members are still missing, writes “People’s Gazette”.
Cult preacher is Paul M.*. He had turned himself in to the police a month ago after two children starved and the incident was reported. However, the guru was released on bail of approximately CHF 700. He is now in custody again and will appear in court for the first time on May 1.
According to research, M. asked his disciples to fast until death in order to “reach Jesus”. Since some bodies were found tied hand and foot, the prosecution also assumes multiple murders.
The sect was founded by M. in 2003 and sometimes had as many as 3000 members. Witnesses told of radical living conditions in the community. The women had to shave their hair. The children were not allowed to go to school because this was not required in the Bible. Mobile phones were banned. And apparently they weren’t allowed to eat. Fasting led to massive famine.
“The team managed to reach some households and rescue 15 people, six of whom are emaciated and in critical condition,” police said at a news conference. For four people, all help came too late. They died during the rescue process. Many of the cult members are said to still be hiding in the woods. It still holds many secrets.
