She wanted to dance, jump and move to the rhythm of the music. Last summer, the American Evelyn Davis (22) attended a concert. Little did she know at the time: this night would change her life forever.
In June 2022, the tragedy begins. Davis attends a concert and returns home unharmed moments later. Three days later she suddenly begins to feel unwell, is constantly tired and complains of a fever. She decides to sit out the illness for the time being.
But when she felt even worse the next day, she was finally taken to the hospital. The doctors there immediately sounded the alarm. Diagnosis: blood poisoning. The condition of the 22-year-old continues to deteriorate. Davis suffers organ failure and falls into a coma for 16 days.
During that time, the doctors gave her medication to stabilize her blood pressure. But this disrupts the blood circulation in the young woman’s body. “I was on these drugs for about 12 days, so by the time they finally stopped taking the dose, my hands and feet had stopped bleeding,” Davis told the Daily Mirror.
She immediately felt strange when she came to after a week or two. “When I woke up, I felt something was wrong with my limbs because they were all black and cold.” Even the doctors were confused at first. But then they found out: Davis had contracted Legionnaires’ disease, a form of pneumonia.
“The doctors said I most likely got infected at the concert I was at, because there was a smoke machine there that probably contained legionella.” Infection with this bacterium can remain asymptomatic, but can also cause flu-like symptoms or even Legionnaires’ disease. .
In the end, the doctors saw no option but to remove the dead limbs. “I was completely shocked when they told me. My whole family was in despair,” Davis said. The 22-year-old had both legs amputated below the knee shortly afterwards.
A week later, her right arm was also removed above the wrist and the left arm two inches below the elbow.
After spending several weeks in the hospital, Davis is transferred to an inpatient rehab facility. Though the doctors tell her she may never be able to walk again, Davis teaches everyone otherwise. Barely two months later, thanks to a prosthetic leg, she takes her first steps. This gives her hope for her future.
“I thought I would lose people and friends, but they surrounded me all the time. Everyone made sure I’m not alone.” (ceded)
