At the start of the renovation phase in the tunnel, which lasted more than five months, there was no traffic jam on the pass road over the Arlberg on Monday, a spokesman for the Austrian motorists’ club ÖAMTC told the German news agency. “It looks different on travel weekends.”

To avoid traffic jams on the mountain road between the Austrian states of Vorarlberg and Tyrol, the traffic experts at ÖAMTC recommend a wide diversion via the cities of Munich, Rosenheim and Kufstein. In addition, there are still no spring-like conditions on the Arlberg Pass, snow was expected on the Arlberg on Monday and Tuesday. In heavy rainfall, the road can quickly turn into a snow road, said Günter Dönz from the responsible road maintenance department of the ORF broadcaster.

At almost 14 kilometers, the Arlberg tunnel is one of the longest road tunnels in Europe. Some 8,000 vehicles use it every day, including German holidaymakers traveling from the Lake Constance area to Tyrol or Italy.

Now the 45-year-old roadway of the tunnel is being completely renovated. In addition, sewers and walls are being renovated. The first construction phase will last until October 6. Next year the tube will be closed from April 15 to November 22. During the closures, the railway tunnel under the Arlberg remains open and serves as an alternative for travelers transferring to the train.
