Tourist stronghold imposed a selfie ban and threatened with high fines

No more dangerous situations, traffic jams and rule violations: Portofino has had enough of tourists taking pictures – especially selfie fanatics.

For example, in the small town on the Italian Riviera, no parking zones were introduced for the first time to prevent tourists from constantly stopping, getting out and taking selfies. If you stop in these zones – of course those with a particularly beautiful view of the picturesque coastal landscape – you have to pay. According to mayor Matteo Viacava, you owe up to 275 euros if you get caught.

Why is Portofino introducing such drastic measures? The well-known locations in and around the beautiful city are so busy during the peak hours of the holiday season that there are real traffic problems.

Mayor Viacava told the BBC: “The tourists who quickly stop for a photo sometimes create anarchic chaos.” This leads to huge traffic jams and blocked roads.

The anti-selfie measures first came into effect over the Easter weekend, when Portofino was flooded with tourists. They will be enforced through October and apply daily from morning to 6 p.m., the city said.

Portofino isn’t the only place where selfies are banned. The United States, France, and the United Kingdom also have such regulations in certain places. For example, in New York and California, it is illegal to take selfies in zoos and places where dangerous wildlife is present.
