Russian war president Vladimir Putin (70) has demoted another top general. Admiral Sergei Avakyants (66) has been commander of the Russian Pacific Fleet since 2012. On Thursday, Putin dismantled the admiral – with his appointment as group leader for military sports training and patriotic education. It is speculated that the reason for Avakyant’s decommissioning was his attempt to refuse to send his men to the Ukrainian front.
The admiral’s removal would usually be communicated through the Department of Defense. Instead, the order came directly from the Kremlin, with the official terminology that Avakyants had already passed the retirement age of 65. Several Russian generals are over 65, including the current Supreme Commander in Ukraine and Chief of General Staff, Army General Valery Gerasimov (67), and the Supreme Commander of the Ground Forces, Oleg Salyukov (67).
Well-informed circles want to know that Putin fired his top admiral for refusing to send his Pacific Fleet sailors to the war in Ukraine. Awakjanz was apparently trying to protect his men from surgery. When forced to do so, he reportedly sent his most undisciplined and unreliable men into the war zone.
Avakyants told the naval commander-in-chief “in plain language that he would not allow the fleet to be ruined,” the Daily Mail quoted a source in the Russian Armed Forces General Staff as saying. He could not tolerate “his sailors, trained officers, well-coordinated crews being ripped apart”.
According to him, Avakyants was especially upset about the losses of his elite marines who were forced to go to war in Ukraine. “The admiral’s dissatisfaction grew,” the source said, as casualties mounted. Many of the Marines who served under Avakyants and died in Ukraine are apparently buried on Russia’s Pacific coast in Vladivostok.
Recently, Avakyants defied direct orders from the Kremlin and said he would not send any more troops as long as he commanded the Pacific Fleet. For this disobedience he was apparently now on leave. Later, as Chief of Staff, he would occupy an insignificant administrative position in Moscow.
According to Russian war forums, marines from the Avakyants Pacific fleet have failed in the war in Ukraine. Since the beginning of the year, after a three-week battle, they have failed to take the mining town of Vuhledar in eastern Ukrainian Donbas.
The 155th Marine Brigade had lost 31 armored vehicles there in February. The military portal “Moscow Calling” also reported letters written by Marines of the 155th. They complained about the meat grinder tactics of Putin’s commanders. In four days of heavy fighting, “300 men were killed, wounded and missing.” (kes)
