The opposition party, which in the past had had to defend itself against accusations of anti-Semitism, was responding to a letter the black MP had written to The Observer newspaper.
In response to an article about racism in Britain, Abbott wrote that several white people also experience prejudice, but are not – like black people – exposed to racism throughout their lives. Irish, Jews and tramps should not have been allowed to sit in the back of the bus in America, she wrote, among other things.
Jewish Labor MP Margaret Hodge called the words “deeply offensive”. After Abbott’s suspension, she wrote on Twitter on Sunday that party leader Keir Starmer’s reaction was correct. “No excuses. No delays.” The comments would now be examined.
Abbott, Britain’s first black MP and once shadow home secretary under controversial ex-party leader Jeremy Corbyn, issued an apology. The 69-year-old explained that she wanted to withdraw her statements completely and distance herself from them. Racism takes many forms and there is no denying that Jews have suffered the most monstrous consequences of it. (SDA)
