Alejandro Toledo arrived in Peru extradited from the United States

Former Peruvian president Alexander Toledo (2001-2006) arrived this Sunday at Peruguarded by the police, extradited from NOW to stand trial for the process that is being conducted against him due to the alleged million-dollar bribery of the company odebrecht get the construction of two sections of the southern interoceanic highway.

The National Police confirmed that the Chief of the National Police, General Jorge Angulo, was present on arrival in Toledo, along with the high police command to guarantee the security of the former president as part of the extradition process.

State Prosecutor (Chief) Patricia Benavides and host International cooperation and extraditions of the State Ministry, Alfredo Rebazaentered the Aviation Police Department to verify the delivery of the Toledo to Peruvian authorities, according to local media reports.

In this setting, Toledo will also be examined by medical examiners before being formally turned over to justice for an identity check process.

After an assessment by Legal Medicine and a hearing before a judge, Toledo will likely be taken by prison authorities to Barbadillo Prison, in Ate County, where former presidents Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) and Pedro Castillo (2021-2021) are being held 2022).

Sued by the Peruvian judiciary since 2017, the founder of the Perú Posible party is accused of allegedly receiving about $35 million from the Odebrecht company, after favoring it in the bidding for contracts to build the Southern Interoceanic Route connecting Peru with Brazil.

The Peruvian prosecutor’s office requested a sentence of 20 years and 6 months in prison for him for granting the concession of sections 2 and 3 of this highway; 35 years for Section 4 and 16 years and 8 months for alleged money laundering in the Ecoteva case.

In March of this year, the public ministry also requested the expropriation of the properties of the former head of the Peruvian executive and his family environment.

The politician popularly known as “El Cholo” has exhausted all available resources and legal entities to avoid extradition and remain under house arrest.

Last Wednesday, a federal judge Thomas S. Hixson, of the Northern District Court of Californiaordered to turn himself in to extradite him to Peru, which the US State Department had given the go-ahead two months earlier.
