John Travolta’s suit from “Saturday Night Fever” has been auctioned

John Travolta’s white suit from the cult film “Saturday Night Fever” (1977) has been auctioned for a lot of money in the US. The white polyester suit with jacket, vest and pants in which Travolta danced to the Bee Gees hit “More Than a Woman” went under the hammer on Saturday in Beverly Hills for $ 260,000 (about 230,000 francs), Julien’s Auctions announced . The auction house had previously estimated its value at $100,000 to $200,000.

Travolta, now 69, became a superstar almost overnight in 1977 as Tony Manero in “Saturday Night Fever.” The role of the dance-loving New York underdog earned him his first Oscar nomination. The suit was auctioned as part of the “Hollywood: Classic & Contemporary” auction.

A program signed by Marilyn Monroe and other stars for then-US President John F. Kennedy’s birthday in May 1962 raised nearly $89,000. A bamboo walking stick that once belonged to movie icon Charlie Chaplin has been auctioned for $39,000. A Golden Globe trophy won by Maximilian Schell (1930 – 2014) for his supporting role in the television movie “Stalin” (1992) amounted to a whopping $16,000.

Nearly 1,400 items were offered in the two-day auction, which was scheduled to take place on Sunday. Other highlights: Harrison Ford’s “Indiana Jones” machete, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man helmet. and Michael J. Fox’s hoverboard from the movie “Back to the Future 2”. (sda/dpa)
