Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds and his colleague Rob McElhenney wept with joy at the rise of Welsh football club AFC Wrexham, which they purchased in 2020 and have looked after ever since.
Reynolds and McElhenney joined American actor Paul Rudd on Saturday as their side beat Boreham Wood 3-1 to earn promotion to the English Football League for the first time in 15 years.
“I’m not sure I can handle what happened tonight,” Reynolds said of the team’s victory in front of 10,000 fans. “I’m still a little speechless.”
His colleague McElhenney, best known for his role in the American series “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, emphasized the importance of the turnout for the entire city of Wrexham. “It’s a moment of catharsis and joy for her,” said the American actor. “It was the honor of my life to be welcomed into their community and to be able to share this experience.”
Reynolds and McElhenney took over the club from a trust of fans in 2020 for £2 million. As a result, they put some money into player transfers. There is a documentary series entitled “Welcome to Wrexham” about the highs and lows of the team and their famous owners.
After the victory on Saturday, the team will play in Football League Two in the future. Three more promotions would be needed ahead of the Premier League. Thanks to the famous owners, AFC Wrexham will play friendlies against top clubs Manchester United and Chelsea next season. (sda/afp)
