The United States has closed its embassy in Sudan and evacuated all government employees from the country.

According to media reports, the US has withdrawn its embassy staff from the country due to the fierce fighting in Sudan. The evacuation by US Air Force planes on Sunday evening was successful, the Washington Post and broadcasters ABC and CBS reported, citing government circles.

The US Embassy in the Sudanese capital Khartoum is closed. According to CNN, all US diplomats stationed in Sudan and their families were on board the military planes. There was initially no official confirmation or information on where the embassy staff had flown to.

For days, the US military had been preparing, along with other Western countries, for the evacuation of their own citizens. Additional forces were transferred to countries neighboring Sudan. Heavy fighting in and around the disputed airport in Khartoum had so far prevented foreigners from being flown out of the northeastern African country. The US government had previously made it clear that Americans who were not in Sudan as diplomats or embassy staff could not expect to be deported.

About a week ago fighting broke out in Sudan between the country’s two most powerful generals and their units. De facto President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan (63), also commander-in-chief of the army, is fighting with the army against his deputy Mohammed Hamdan Daglo (48), the leader of the powerful paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
