Russian President Vladimir Putin (70) wants to change not only the future, but also the past. He clarified in several speeches that Ukraine was founded by communist Russia and has no history. This propaganda is now making its way into Russian children’s textbooks.
In a new edition of fourth-grade Russian history textbooks, Kiev does not exist. The Russian research portal Mediazona compared the 2021 edition of the history book “The World Around Us” with the latest. Any reference to Kiev has been changed in the current version. For example, a monk from the famous Kiev Pechersk Lavra has just become a monk.
One of the most famous figures in Russian history is Knyas Vladimir, the sole ruler of the Kievan Rus. The Kievan Rus was an ancient Slavic people in the Middle Ages. Their empire is considered the precursor state from which Ukraine, Belarus and Russia developed. Kiev was the capital where Knyas Vladimir baptized people – the birth of Russian Orthodoxy. Putin’s new history books now say that the Russians were baptized in the capital. Instead of ruling the empire of Kievan Rus, the nobleman Knyas Igor now ruled Russia, according to the history books.
The history booklets are now being printed and will be used from next school year. Former culture minister Vladimir Medinsky announced in April 2022 that the history books would be changed “taking into account the historical events of that year”. He then referred to the “special operation” and to the territories in Ukraine annexed by Russia. “These facts will of course be reflected in the new textbooks,” Medinsky said.
According to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, Russian troops are cracking down on Ukrainian literature in the annexed regions of Ukraine. Books that were considered ideological by the occupiers are destroyed.
Putin’s propaganda is already being indoctrinated in children in Russia. But not only Russia is changing the school plan. The Ukrainian curriculum was also changed. According to the ministry, the curricula have been adapted “taking into account new historical developments”.
Classics by Russian authors – for example, “War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy – were removed from the curriculum. Pushkin, Dostoevsky and 40 other authors are no longer required reading. Instead works by Jean de la Fontaine, Anna Gavalda and John Boyne are read. However, the Russian language does not disappear from the classroom: works by Nikolai Gogol, Vladimir Korolenko and a work by Mikhail Bulgakov are allowed to stay because they either have Ukrainian ancestors or are particularly close to the country.
