Ugandan president revises controversial law against homosexuals

In Uganda, plans for a law imposing the death penalty for homosexual acts are being revised again after heavy international criticism. President Yoweri Museveni refrained from signing the bill, which had already been passed by parliament, within the required time limit. Government party NRM (National Resistance Movement) will review and ‘improve’ the text after consultation with Museveni, party leader Emmanuel Dombo said on Twitter on Thursday evening.

The East African country’s parliament passed the “anti-LGBT law” on March 21. Museveni should have signed it within a month. LGBT is the English abbreviation for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. The variants LGBTQ, LGBTQI or LGBTQIA+ are also often used. Each letter represents a person’s gender identity or sexual orientation. The project was widely criticized internationally. The US threatened Uganda with economic consequences if the law was enacted.

In recent years there have been repeated attempts by various social groups to introduce stricter laws against homosexuals in Uganda. These usually failed because of a presidential veto or were overturned by the Supreme Court. (sda/dpa)
