Ukraine prepares new troops for frontline action – the nightly update without photos

Ukraine wants to send more border troops to the front, the US is stepping up military aid and there is an air raid alert in Kiev. Meanwhile, Putin’s visit to the front would have been staged – here’s the nightly update.

US announces further aid worth $325 million

The US government has announced new military aid to Ukraine for an amount of 325 million dollars (almost 297 million euros). The package mainly contains ammunition for weapons systems such as the Himars multiple rocket launchers and artillery shells, spokeswoman for US President Joe Biden Karine Jean-Pierre said Wednesday (local time). According to the White House, the new aid will come from US military supplies.

“This new security assistance will enable Ukraine to continue to courageously defend itself in the face of Russia’s brutal, unprovoked and unjustified war,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said. The US is considered Ukraine’s main ally in the defense against the Russian invasion and has been supporting Ukraine with billions in military aid since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression.

Zelenskyj: Ukraine is preparing new troops for frontline deployment

Ukraine is preparing new troops for the frontline, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Specifically, it concerns border troops that he visited on Wednesday in Volhynia in the border triangle of Ukraine with Belarus and Poland. Border troops from Ukraine have already been deployed to the fronts, including in the hard-fought city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine.

“Together with all our defense and security forces, the border guards are fighting at the front, even in the most difficult areas,” Zelenskyy said in his evening video address. “We are also preparing new units – border guard units – to join our active operations, to join the movement that we are gradually developing.”

Air raid siren in Kiev – speculation about NASA satellites

An unusual streak of light on the nighttime horizon over Kiev has triggered an air raid alert in the Ukrainian capital. Shortly thereafter, the city’s military administration announced on Telegram that a disused NASA satellite that had entered Earth’s atmosphere may have caused this phenomenon. “An air raid siren has been issued to prevent injuries from falling debris,” it said. The anti-aircraft defenses had not become active. The satellite may be the RHESSI space telescope, whose reentry was announced Thursday night. The telescope was launched in February 2002 and the mission ended in October 2018.

Kiev: only Putin’s doppelgänger visiting the front

According to Kiev, Russian President Vladimir Putin was represented by a lookalike during his alleged visit to the front in the occupied territories of Ukraine. “It wasn’t the real Putin,” Ukraine’s National Security Council secretary Oleksiy Danilov claimed on TV Wednesday without evidence. “To talk to the real Putin, you have to quarantine for at least 10 to 14 days.” The Putin sighted in Kherson was “an ordinary double, of which there are several, as is known.”

In Danilov’s words, Putin is “a frightened man” and the idea that he has decided to visit the front is simply impossible. According to information from the Kremlin, Putin had visited both the occupied territories of the Cherson region in the south and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine on Tuesday and met with leading military figures. The exact time of the alleged visit was not given by the Kremlin. Information from the war zone cannot be independently verified.

Ukrainian front fighters receive about 2,500 euros extra per month

Ukrainian soldiers receive 100,000 hryvnia (about 2,500 euros) per month on top of their military wages for their front-line combat against Russian troops. The Ukrainian military leadership announced this on Wednesday to put an end to speculation about wages and benefits. “A soldier who serves the country and protects it from the aggressor, risks his own life and health and performs his duties under extremely difficult conditions, must be highly motivated,” the statement from the General Staff said.

The 100,000 hryvnia are “reserved for defenders fighting directly at the front”. Soldiers who perform tasks in the combat area but are not directly involved in combat, as well as air defense soldiers, received an additional 30,000 hryvnia (737 euros). Those deployed in the back receive no bonuses in the front line. The basic military wage for all soldiers was increased to almost 20,000 hryvnia (490 euros) from the beginning of February.
