Scottish ultramarathon runner Joasia Zakrzewski during a race in Norway. The runner was recently disqualified from an ultramarathon in the UK.

Joasia Zakrzewski (47) is a woman of records: two months ago she ran a world record in the ultramarathon in Taiwan. There she would have walked a distance of about 410 kilometers within 48 hours.

In the 80 km run from Manchester to Liverpool on April 7, she finished third. Only: Zakrewski cheated: she allegedly used a car for a distance of about four kilometers.

Zakrzewski was “complete and ready”

After the race, organizer Wayne Drinkwater was told that someone had gained an “unsportsmanlike advantage,” as the “Times” wrote. After investigating the tracking system, the perpetrator was found.

When the organizers of the event took a closer look at her GPS data, her fraud came to light. The Scot would have covered a mile in just 100 seconds.

According to information from her circle of acquaintances, Zakrzewski had had to travel 48 hours before the race. During the race itself, she was “fixed and ready”. “She really regrets causing such a nuisance,” says the acquaintance.

“It’s Very Disappointing”

David Ovens, chairman of the Scottish Athletics Association, said: “The incident is very disappointing as Joasia has had such a successful time over the last few years. I hope she can put this behind her, that there will be an explanation and that she will successful career.”

It is still unclear why the athlete cheated. (lia)
