Kremlin opponent Navalny mistreated in penal camp

According to Vadim Kobsev, Navalny was punished by security forces on Monday with a knee kick to the side for refusing to share his cell with a smelly prisoner. Navalny complains again and again that a person with “major problems with physical hygiene” is put in his house.

The smell was unbearable, Kobsev said, according to Navalny. His client had asked to be separated from the man. The prison management announces a new criminal case for causing a riot. The 46-year-old risked an additional five years in prison. There are other proceedings underway. Navalny repeatedly calls the intimidation of the penal camp administration torture.

“Brutal and cynical provocation”

According to Kobsev, Navalny initially complained to the administration about the smell and accused those responsible of deliberate provocation. They then threatened him and forced him to go to jail and then called the emergency services wearing body armor and helmets. A video shows that Navalny was forcibly pushed into the cell without resisting. After that, the prison administration filled out the papers for the criminal procedure and had the prisoners taken away.

Kobzev called on the prison authorities and the prosecutor’s office to respond to the “brutal and cynical provocation” of the prison administration in the penal camp in the Vladimir region near Moscow. Navalny was sentenced to nine years in prison in March last year. One case is currently pending on allegations of extremism and terrorism. The trials of Navalny, who is an opponent of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, have been internationally criticized as cases of arbitrary justice.
