Shark washes up on Majorca beach

Big shock Sunday evening in the southeast of Mallorca: residents could hardly believe their eyes when a stately shark suddenly approached the flat beach on the popular bay of Cala Llombard.

He swam straight to shore and even washed up on the beach. Eyewitnesses estimate the body length of the animal at about two meters. No injuries were visible. Fortunately, the shark freed itself after a few seconds and swam away.

The animal rescue service of the Palma Aquarium expressed its concern to the “Mallorca Zeitung”. Anyone who makes such a finding should immediately call 112. Specialists would then be called in to assist the animal in an emergency.

Not a rarity

Sharks of this size appear in Majorca at regular intervals. In 2018, a two-metre-long shark in the shallow waters of Cala Domingos Bay caused dramatic scenes: the swimmers had to be evacuated. Then it turned out that the animal was terminally ill.

“Direct contact with wild animals is always dangerous,” says the animal rescue expert. “Under no circumstances should you touch the animal.” The condition of the animal is always difficult to estimate.

The latest sighting is probably a blue shark that just hunted another animal and ended up in the bay, reports the “Mallorca Zeitung”. Blue sharks typically reach lengths of up to 12 feet, and their skin and fins are shimmering blue. (A)
