This is evident from a joint statement by the British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and his American colleague Antony Blinken, which the British Foreign Office published on Monday. “We call for an immediate end to the violence and the resumption of talks aimed at civilian government,” Cleverly said in a statement.
Two rival generals, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, have been called in to protect civilians and bystanders, foreigners and diplomats.
Allies in the Arab world, Africa and international organizations share a “deep concern about the fighting and violence in Sudan and the threat it poses to civilians, the Sudanese nation and possibly even the region”.
Since a coup in 2019, Northeast African Sudan has been governed by a military government under de facto President Al-Burhan. In recent days, the conflict between Al-Burhan and his deputy Daglo, the leader of the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has been simmering for weeks.
Al-Burhan and Daglo want power in the country. Both sides have been fighting fiercely since Saturday, regardless of civilian casualties.
