The Iranian police closed 155 companies in one day for not complying with the law that forces women to cover themselves with a veil and sent messages to 3500 citizens for not wearing the obligatory one Islamic clothingthe media of that Persian country reported on Monday.
Iranian authorities on Saturday began implementing a plan to bring back the headscarf, an article of clothing abandoned by many women following the death of Mahsa Amini in September after she was arrested for improperly wearing a hijab.
On the first day of the implementation of the plan, the police closed 137 shops and 18 restaurants across the country due to non-compliance with regulations requiring women to wear veils, the official IRNA news agency announced today.
“Agents closed and charged 137 stores and 18 restaurants for ignoring notices,” said police spokesman Saeed Montazerolmahdi, reports IRNA.
Montazerolmahdi confirmed that only a “minority” does not comply with the law and assured that the majority of citizens support the “dress code” in the Persian country.
Warning message
In addition, the police sent 3,500 text messages to women driving vehicles without headscarves, the reformist daily Shargh reported.
“Dear Madam, on (…) at (…) you committed the criminal offense of removing the hijab in a public place, in accordance with Article 638 of the Islamic Criminal Code,” the message reads.
“This message is a preliminary warning and if you persist in repeating the crime of not covering the veil, you will face the law,” the text of the warning continued.
Shargh noted that billboards reminding women to wear headscarves have been placed in malls in Tehran.
At the same time, police have asked big stores to post doormen at entrances to warn women to cover up, something that is already happening in the capital’s subway, the paper said.
The law punishes women who do not veil with a fine and up to two months in prison, but the authorities are also considering other options, such as denying banking services.
Women caught uncovered in their cars face possible vehicle impoundment.
The Iranian police on Saturday it launched a plan to reimpose headscarves with the use of cameras in public places and warnings to business owners.
In addition, the judicial authorities have announced that they will also prosecute persons who encourage women to remove the obligatory Islamic headscarf in public.
At the beginning of the month, the ministries of education and health announced that students who do not wear headscarves will not be allowed to enroll in universities and institutes.
