Guerrilla announces talks with Colombian government

A group of renegade fighters from Colombia’s former FARC guerrillas reportedly announced peace talks with the government next month. A spokeswoman for the group EMC (Estado Mayor Central) said at a meeting of the group in the Amazon region, according to Colombian media, that their negotiators are ready to start talks on May 16.

With an estimated 3,000 members, the EMC is the largest of the so-called FARC dissident groups. These fighters rejected the peace treaty that the left-wing Farc (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia), the largest rebel group, signed with the government in 2016.

By then, the South American country had experienced 52 years of armed conflict between armed forces, left-wing guerrilla organizations and right-wing paramilitaries. Colombia’s first leftist president, Gustavo Petro, in power since August, pledged talks with all armed groups for a comprehensive peace.

Colombia’s High Commissioner for Peace, Danilo Rueda, announced last Wednesday that he had met with members of the EMC leadership. There is a truce between the group and the government. (sda/dpa)
