In the context of rapprochement with regional rival Saudi Arabia, the Iranian government has invited King Salman. Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said in Tehran on Monday.
An invitation previously sent by the Kingdom to Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was accepted. Initially, nothing was known about the date of the planned state visit.
Iran and Saudi Arabia want to resume bilateral relations after seven years of diplomatic ice age. Both countries compete for political and military influence in the region. A rapprochement could lead to major unrest in the region, including in civil war-torn Yemen, where the countries support rival factions.
After a meeting of the foreign ministers of both countries in China, which brokered the rapprochement, the regional powers want to reopen their embassies in the other countries as a next step. In an interview with the state agency IRNA, Aliresa Enajati, Foreign Ministry director general for the Gulf region, said a reopening is planned for May 9 this year. (sda/dpa)
