EDA advises against traveling to Sudan

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) advised against tourist and other non-emergency travel to Sudan on Sunday. Travel to separate parts of the country was generally discouraged.

The situation is confusing and tense given the ongoing, fierce fighting in the Northeast African country. A further deterioration of the situation cannot be ruled out, the EDA previously announced on the short message service Twitter.

Dead and wounded in Sudan

Bitter fighting between the regular forces and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan plunged the country into a serious state crisis. Neither the Army nor the RSF were able to gain the upper hand by Sunday afternoon. Both sides reported individual successes and captured military bases.

After the death of three employees during the power struggle in Sudan, the World Food Program of the United Nations (WFP) has stopped its aid efforts in the North East African crisis country. The WFP announced this on Sunday. The three employees were killed in clashes between the army and paramilitaries on Saturday, and two others were injured. WFP director Cindy McCain said staff had delivered relief supplies to people in the village of Kabkabiya in North Darfur. She called for “immediate steps” to ensure the safety of other WFP workers in Sudan.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) expressed concern about the situation of the population in the country. Since the start of the conflict, there have been repeated shots and explosions in the capital Khartoum and other cities, including in densely populated residential areas. Civilian casualties were reported from various places. An exact number was not initially known. A Sudanese medical organization said dozens of people had died. The ICRC urged the parties to the conflict to take precautionary measures to prevent further injuries and civilian deaths. (SDA)
