After the verdict of the Constitutional Council, favorable for the pension reform, especially support for the blackened raising the retirement age to 64Emmanuel Macron is looking for an exit door to promote his political activity ahead of the four years he still has left as President of the Republic.
The French president decided to give a speech this Monday to present the main lines of his political program future and thus try to regain the trust of the French, who have an increasingly negative opinion of him (69% have an unfavorable opinion).
Macron invited employers and trade unions next Tuesday to go to the Elysée Palace, to face a new cycle with a new tone, since this time “the doors of the Elysée will remain open, with no conditions for dialogue”. However, the unions persistently demanded such a meeting even before the adoption of the pension law, and now they are rejecting that proposal.
There are others on Emmanuel Macron’s table major reforms around jobs, immigration or nuclear energy. And count on your determination to move them forward. Neither street demonstrations, nor protests by the opposition, which accuses him of arrogance and provocation —“He thinks he’s Jupiter and doesn’t have to answer to anyone”, Socialist leader Olivier Faure said yesterday – none of this seems to be deterring his will to stick with his plan. “Don’t give up, that’s my motto,” he said Friday during a visit to the Notre-Dame Cathedral construction site.
Labor Minister Olivier Dussopt, in charge of defending the pension reform, must present himself before the summer bill for work with measures on the employment of older persons or working conditions. Macron’s aim is to quickly present this new text to calm spirits, aggravated by three months of protests against raising the retirement age, and to focus discussions on “how to work better”, one of the issues that is increasingly among the concerns of the French.
Four-day work week
This law could include, among other measures, the establishment 36-hour four-day work weekgive more weight to company agreements or ban layoff plans targeting veterans.
Another of the big issues that Macron wants to promote is new immigration law. In principle, it should have been ongoing since March 28, but considering the social dissatisfaction caused by the pension reform, she believes that the topic is too explosive and decided to divide it into several different texts: on the one hand, a bill with measures in which it can exist a greater degree of consensus, such as the best treatment of asylum claims; on the other hand, it leaves the most controversial issues to the parliamentary initiative, such as the legalization of illegal immigrants working in sectors with employment difficulties.
This Monday, Macron will reveal more details about his plans for the future, but everyone is wondering what his presidency will look like in the next four years. The majority of the French do not digest his way of implementing the pension reform, which is disputed by a large part of the Assembly, even some representatives of the presidential majority.
This social crisis favored only by Marine Le Pen who, according to polls, would have beaten Macron by a large margin (55% to 45%) if the presidential election were held today.
