“If necessary, we will also have strategic nuclear weapons. We are already preparing existing launch pads,” said Viktor Chrenin at a military training ground. If the West’s hostile rhetoric continues, that will be “the next step,” the general said. Belarus itself has no nuclear weapons. At the end of March, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he would station tactical nuclear weapons in the former Soviet Republic.

Before Khrenin, the ruler of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, had threatened to agree with Russia on the stationing of strategic nuclear weapons in the country if necessary. Strategic nuclear weapons have a significantly longer range than tactical ones.

At the same time, Chrenin specifically accused Poland of preparing to attack Belarus and Russia. “Arms shipments from both America and South Korea are planned there. We also see their military infrastructure being prepared and new units and brigades being created that have never been mentioned before,” said the 51-year-old. All this is against Belarus, he claimed.

He described the maneuvers in the Brest region of western Belarus as a first. For the first time, a sudden troop check is taking place on such a large scale. According to him, an entire brigade of 6,000 soldiers was mobilized and marched.

The ruler Lukashenko is politically, economically and militarily dependent on Moscow. Russia also launched its aggressive war against Ukraine from Belarusian territory. Moscow also surprisingly put its entire Pacific fleet on alert and combat readiness during an unannounced inspection Friday morning and began a military exercise.
