More than two months after the devastating earthquake in the Turkish-Syrian border area, the death toll has risen again, according to the Turkish government.
According to current counts, 50,500 people have died in connection with the earthquake in Turkey, Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said on Friday. The identities of about 1,000 of their dead remain unclear.
On February 6, two strong earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 7.6 shook southeastern Turkey and northern Syria. In total, more than 57,000 people were killed and more than two million people were left homeless in Turkey alone.
So far, 3.7 million people have left the affected region of Turkey. According to the Turkish government, more than 300,000 buildings are at least moderately to heavily damaged or need to be demolished. (sda/dpa)
