A Spaniard volunteered to live underground in complete isolation for 500 days. Mountaineer and speleologist Beatriz Flamini left the approximately 70 meter deep cave in the Costa Tropical area in the southern Spanish province of Granada on Friday under great media hype.
Protected by sunglasses and a helmet, the 50-year-old climbed out of the hole with a big smile. She definitely needs a shower first and will answer questions later, she told the numerous journalists after many hugs. In a brief statement, she described the experience as “excellent”. Several TV channels, including the state-owned RTVE, reported live for hours.
Researchers from different disciplines from the Universities of Granada and Almería managed and supervised the “Timecave” project. According to her, since the beginning of the experiment, which was captured on video, Flamini has had no contact with the outside world in November 2021. Among other things, she did not have a watch or telephone with her and only had a laptop with which she could only send information to the outside world but not receive it.
The scientists want to investigate the effects of complete isolation and determine, among other things, whether this has led to neuropsychological and cognitive changes. There should also be a documentary. According to the Spanish researchers, Flamini broke the “world record” of Italy’s Christine Lanzoni, who spent exactly 269 days in a cave in 2007. (SDA)
