The Chilean Chamber of Deputies has approved a bill by a large majority to reduce working hours in the South American country.
The Chilean newspaper “La Tercera” reports this on Tuesday (local time). According to a government statement, President Gabriel Boric will sign the decree in the coming days, so that the weekly working time can be gradually reduced from 45 to 40 hours. This makes Chile the second country in South America, after Ecuador, to introduce the working hours recommended by the International Labor Organisation.
The original bill was introduced in Chile in 2017 by current government member Camila Vallejo and Communist Party MP Karol Cariola. Workers’ rights are an important pillar of the program with which Boric, like Vallejo, a former leader of the student movement, took office on March 11, 2022 as the youngest president of the South American country.
