It is a nightmare for the US government and its NATO partners. An unknown user has published numerous secret documents on the chat platform Discord. Among other things, the newspapers show the true extent of Western involvement in the war in Ukraine. Now it is also clear: there are special forces from NATO countries in the crisis area. This is reported by the British Guardian.

The number of Western special forces present in Ukraine is stated in a document. The pieces are dated February and March 2023. They appear to be internal government presentations used to update decision makers on the current situation.

Mainly from the UK

According to the documents, US officials at the time counted 97 special forces from NATO countries. 50 of them came from Great Britain, 14 from the US and 15 from France. However, the documents do not show for what purpose the special forces were in Ukraine. So it is unclear whether they fought themselves or were in the country for training or reconnaissance purposes. In addition, it is not known whether the special forces are still in the country and whether the NATO personnel on the ground have now been expanded.

While exact details about the organization of the armed forces are not given, it appears that the special forces are part of a NATO command coordinated by the military alliance’s special operations headquarters.

Government criticizes reporting

American media have been reporting on the data breach for days. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, 60, says the matter is being taken “very, very seriously.” Kirby has strongly criticized media coverage of the documents. “We are concerned that these documents are out there,” he says. “You are absolutely not allowed to be public.”

US officials have confirmed to the New York Times that many of the documents are genuine and were originally posted online without any alteration. In retrospect, some documents apparently changed.

The US government is trying to find out who caused the leak. Secretary of State for Defense Lloyd Austin (69): “We will turn every stone until we know the origin and magnitude of the incident.” The case has been referred to the Ministry of Justice, which has launched a criminal investigation.
