Kamala Harris will fight for the protection of abortion rights

vice president of the usa Kamala Harrisbecame the voice of those who fear new abortion restrictions this Wednesday and vowed to fight tirelessly to protect the right of every American to make decisions about their own bodies.

Harris’ remarks come at a time when NOW is waiting for a court decision to take effect this Friday that seeks to ban the marketing of a drug called mifepristone, which is used in more than half of all abortions in the country.

“The women of the United States are in a state of constant terror about what this could mean for them and the people they love,” said Harris, who led the meeting with senior government officials, including the attorney general. Merrick wreathassess the situation.

Harris has led the fight for abortion access since nearly a year ago in the conservative majority US Supreme Court it would remove constitutional protections for that right, allowing each state to set its own laws to ban or restrict abortion.

For the past year, the Vice President has traveled to different American states to learn first-hand about the experiences of pregnant women after the Supreme Court’s decision.

She talked to people like Amanda, who miscarried and went to the doctor three times for medical help, but couldn’t find any help. They visited her only when she was so serious that her life was in danger, Haris recounted this Wednesday, visibly moved.

Most abortions are currently prohibited in 12 of the 50 US states, with some exceptions only when the mother’s life is in danger.

Harris warned that the situation could get worse if, as planned, the Texas judge’s ruling goes into effect this Friday Matthew Kacsmarykappointed by former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) and which seeks to limit medication abortions.

In those states where abortion was banned, many women turned to the pill because it was easily available and delivered by mail.

In particular, the Texas judge’s ruling is directed against mifepristone, which he approved for marketing in 2000. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the United States medical regulator.

The FDA has conducted numerous checks before approving this drug and ensures that it is completely safe; But the anti-abortion activists who filed the lawsuit say it’s risky.

Never before has a judge overturned medical decisions by the FDA, whose criteria for approving drugs are the benchmark worldwide.

The Biden government appealed the Texas judge’s ruling earlier Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuitone of the most conservative in the country, but that court has not yet positioned itself.

The case has caused so much concern about the ramifications it could have on the approval of other drugs that two dozen drug companies, including giants like Pfizer, have asked the Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit overturn the Texas judge’s ruling.
