The leak of classified documents about Ukraine has set off alarm bells in the US.

Washington admits that he does not know who is behind it and what else may come to light

In times of war, information is a resource and a weapon at the same time. Or at least that’s what it seems to show hundreds of Pentagon documents published onlineamong which there is critical information about the war from Ukraine. The event was received with concern in Washington, which described it as “national security risk”according to one of his defense spokesmen.

Posted on a Discord server dedicated to the Minecraft video game, the leak leaked on April 5 when several Russian Telegram channels began posting screenshots of the documents. They are all estimated to be from the same dates, late February to early March.

Both the Pentagon and the Justice Department will work to determine the source of the leak, although he acknowledged Monday John KirbyPentagon spokesman a prioriThey have little information. Kirby pointed out that they don’t know “who’s behind it” or “what else might be out there” and, above all, to ignore if the filtration is deactivated. What is known is that, although sources from the Administration rated some documents as good, some of them were manipulated after being published on the Internet.

More than a hundred pages appear to come from the Pentagon, and at least some of them were prepared for Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, with access to critical intelligence and the highest level of confidentiality.

The documents would contain information about the state of the Ukrainian army on the threshold of launching a new offensive against the Russian occupiers. They would also point to The United States has discovered critical weaknesses on the Ukrainian side, including vulnerabilities in the air defense system and ammunition supply problems. In addition, they would find that Kiev’s plan for the spring would include an attempt to reach the Black Sea in order to sever the Crimean peninsula’s land connection with Russia.

From Kiev, the secretary of the Ukrainian Security Council, Oleksiy Danilov, downplayed the significance of the information leak, pointing out that “only five people” really know what form the Ukrainian counter-offensive will take. According to the leak, the Pentagon’s predictions for the next Ukrainian offensive would be a “moderate territorial gain” at a high troop cost.

The US could have access to sources in the Kremlin, the Russian Ministry of Defense, the military intelligence agency GRU, and even the Wagner mercenary group, based on the transversal nature of the leaked information about Russian war capabilities. Such an expansion of US information networks inside the Russian state would give them real-time warnings about targets and attacks by Russian forces on the territory of neighboring Ukraine.

Filtering also includes intelligence about other countriesSome, like Israel, Egypt or South Korea, America’s supposed allies. Now, while it waits to identify the source of the documents, Washington will also have to work to dispel suspicions that it is spying on its allies.
