At the start of the strike, those responsible for Britain’s NHS national health system assumed that around 350,000 doctor’s appointments, many of them surgeries, would fall victim to the strike.

The doctors claim their salaries have fallen by 26 percent in real terms over the past 15 years. This is due to wage increases that have always been lower than inflation. British Health Secretary Steve Barclay called the demands “unreasonable”. This would mean a salary increase of £ 20,000 (almost 23,000 euros) per year for some doctors. In Britain, the NHS is organized by the state and, unlike the German health system, funded by taxes.

The doctors’ strike is the latest episode in a months-long struggle by staff for more pay. Nursing staff had been on strike for three days in March.
