Former Russian officer Igor Girkin has started a new movement in Russia. This aims to protect the pre-war faction in the Kremlin and ensure that the war in Ukraine is over as soon as possible.
As the American think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW) writes, the newly created “Club of Angry Patriots” is likely to cause problems within the Kremlin. The members of the group are therefore convinced that Russia is on the verge of military defeat. If Moscow fails to improve the situation at the front radically, there is a risk of a pro-Western coup d’état or, in the worst case, even civil war.
Therefore, the “Furious Patriots Club” plans to create a defense network. This should ward off a coup d’état. In addition, they want to “help the Russian authorities to complete the military special operation in Ukraine as soon as possible,” says a Telegram message – with a Russian victory, of course. However, a long war should be avoided.
The group does not want to intervene militarily in the conflict. Instead, they want to “raise the awareness of Russian officials”. These would belong to an “anti-war faction”. Now the movement wants to try to convince Russian officials of the war.
According to the ISW, the formation of the new club further fuels the simmering conflict within the Kremlin. There is a gap between officials who support the war in Ukraine and those who clearly oppose it.
As the think tank analyzes, this gap has likely widened again in recent weeks. The reason for this is, among other things, the failed winter offensive, according to the American think tank.
According to a Russian military blogger, the pro-Russian governor of the Kremlin-annexed Donetsk region is already opposing the group. As the military blogger writes on Telegram, Denis Pushilin ordered his officials to spread rumors about the “Angry Patriots Club”.
The blogger also claimed that the movement was preparing a pro-Western coup in Russia. The blogger’s conclusion: “The mood is not good.” (zis)
