Large fire in Hamburg still not extinguished

The large fire that destroyed several warehouses in the northern German city of Hamburg on Easter Sunday was still not extinguished the next day.

A police spokesman said early Monday that 27 hours after the first fire was reported, the extinguishing work had still not been completed. He assumed the operation would go on all day. There is no information yet on the material damage or the cause of the fire.

Early Sunday morning, a large part of the warehouse complex of a car dealership in the Rothenburgsort district was on fire. Police say the fire initially started on vehicles, washing machines and other goods stored outdoors on Sunday. Several so-called IBC containers then burst open on the site because they contained flammable liquids.

There were no injuries in the large fire. However, a huge cloud of smoke was drawn towards the city center, which is why the Hamburg population was warned of dangerous smoke gases on Sunday morning. Local and long-distance traffic in the east of the city was restricted for several hours. (saw/sda/dpa)
